Tsegyalgar East is very happy to announce a Chöd reatreat with authorized Santi Maha Sangha (SMS) instructor Steven Landsberg.

This retreat will focus on the practice of Chöd as used in the Dzogchen Community. We will practice the melodies and the use of the ritual instruments. During the course there will also be explanations of some of the principle points regarding view, meditation, and conduct.

Chöd is commonly practiced throughout Tibet. It is found in all schools of Buddhism as well as in the Dzogchen and Bönpo traditions. The origins of this practice can be traced principally to the Tibetan female master Machig Labdrön, who lived around 1000 CE.

The Chöd practice arose directly out of Machig Labdrön’s own experiences and knowledge as the essence of all the teachings she had received. Chöd means cutting through our ego. Machig Labdrön understood that cutting through our ego is essential and later gave the name of Chöd to the teachings that embody this principle.

Steven Landsberg began studying Tibetan Buddhism in 1967 while he was living in India. He also spent two years studying Sanskrit and Tibetan and many years doing preliminary practices.

In 1982, he attended his first retreat with Chögyal Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche and began practicing under his guidance. After having studied and practiced the Base Level, he passed the exam in 1996. He has continued to pursue his study and practice of SMS since that time and was authorized by Chögyal Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche to teach in August 2010. Since then, he has been giving courses internationally on various aspects of the SMS base level as well as public courses on mindfulness and the application of presence and how these skills can be generally useful.
