Dzogchen or 'The Great Perfection’, is considered the highest and most immediate path towards spiritual progress in Tibetan Buddhism. It is not a religious doctrine but rather a system of inner knowledge, based on the development of self-awareness.
The starting point for the practice of Dzogchen is to receive ‘Direct Transmission’ from a Dzogchen master. ‘Direct Transmission’ is the means by which the master introduces us directly to the true nature of our mind: our primordial state. It is best to receive ‘Direct Transmission’ from the master in person by attending a retreat. Since this is not always possible, Chögyal Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche also gives ‘Direct Transmission’ via the worldwide web on three occasions each year, which correspond to particular anniversaries in the Dzogchen calendar.
